The Department of Nursing moved into their new location during the summer of 2010. The 26 million dollar modern healthcare education and research facility is located at 316 West 2nd Street. The building is equipped with state- of-the-art equipment to provide students with quality instruction for classes and laboratories and to prepare them for clinical practice experiences. Students are able to simulate imaging procedures in a controlled environment prior to performing them on live patients. Laboratories have videotaping capabilities, allowing students and faculty to evaluate their performance. This also allows students to develop their skills and become more confident prior to their clinical assignments. The building also houses a testing and multimedia center, with all required IT infrastructure, allowing online testing and the performance of computerized instructional modules to improve student learning. These experiences provide the students with knowledge and confidence in preparation for their computerized national certification exams.
The two labs house computerized manikins that are programmed to mimic a wide range of illnesses and patient profiles allowing students opportunities to care for individuals and situations which may be unavailable to students in hospital settings. Skill sets are honed as students become “working nurses” during full scale simulations which may include calling providers for medical orders, prioritizing and delegating care for multiple clients, and interacting with the interprofessional team.
The most current technology advances are employed. Students learn hands-on adult and pediatric patient assessment, communication techniques, medication administration, as well as a multitude of skills required of registered nurses.
The Multi-Media Lab consist of 50 machines that house a number of helpful programs that are used by the students in the CHER building. The machines house the software that the nursing students use for testing and practice. The lab has a printer in the facility for students to print out materials as needed. Located in the back of the lab is a number of multi-media resources used by students. This lab also houses the Multi-Media Lab Coordinator and IT Specialist who works with students to get started with their test and proctors them. This person also helps with IT problems as they arise.
