PROGRAM

The Computed Tomography/Magnetic Resonance Program at Morehead State University is an area of concentration in the Imaging Sciences bachelor's degree program.  During the program, students are provided with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform procedures using specialized computer equipment,  ionizing radiation and magnetic resonance to produce sectional anatomy images for the diagnosis and treatment of various pathological conditions.  Along with lecture courses, the program provides hands-on training opportunities in its state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and at clinical education centers. The program prepares graduates who seek employment in hospitals and imaging centers as CT Technologists and/or MR Technologists.

The program has a selective admission process and limited enrollment.  Students are admitted once a year each April, with classes beginning in the second summer session of each year.  The qualified applicant must be a radiographer who is registry-eligible or registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and must have completed all prerequisites prior to entry.

Following official acceptance, the program consists of 13 months (full-time) of lecture courses, laboratory courses and clinical practice.  While enrolled it the program students will have the opportunity to participate in professional and service learning activities through their student organization, Students Pursing Education In Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance (S.P.E.C.T.M.R.)

Mission Statement

The CT/MR Program, in conjunction with the Department and University's Mission, is committed to preparing graduates to function as component computed tomography and magnetic resonance technologists and to provide a foundation for continued lifetime learning designated in computed tomography/magnetic resonance.

Program completion rate is defined as the number of students who complete the program within 150% of the stated program length. The rate is determined by the number of students who graduate within 13 months of entry into the program compared to the number of students who are enrolled and attend the first day of scheduled class.

Job placement rate is defined as the number graduates employed in the radiologic sciences compared to the number of graduates actively seeking employment in the radiologic sciences. The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) has defined not actively seeking employment as: 1) graduate fails to communicate with program officials regarding employment status after multiple attempts, 2) graduate is unwilling to seek employment that requires relocation, 3) graduate is unwilling to accept employment due to salary or hours, 4) graduate is on active military duty, and/or 5) graduate is continuing education.

 Accreditation

Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT)

The Computed Tomography/Magnetic Resonance Program maintains programmatic accreditation in Magnetic Resonance by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. Programs accredited by the JRCERT must demonstrate that they are in substantial compliance with the relevant JRCERT accreditation standards. “Standards” can be accessed by visiting the JRCERT website.

Students have the right to report the Computed Tomography/Magnetic Resonance Program for failure to meet the “Standards” to the accrediting agency. If the program receives a complaint regarding allegations of non-compliance with the Standards, a response will occur within 30 working days. A record of such complaints and their resolution will be maintained in the program office (CHER 210). Currently no complaints regarding non-compliance have occurred. CT MR Careers

An Imaging Sciences degree in Computed Tomography/Magnetic Resonance offers a wide variety of career opportunities. Graduates may become employed in hospitals, outpatient imaging centers, education, research, sales, and applications. Opportunities for travel are also available.  BSIS CT/MR graduates in eastern Kentucky can typically expect a starting salary of approximately $45,000 - $48,000 annually.


PROGRAM ADMISSIONS

The Computed Tomography/Magnetic Resonance Program has a selective admission policy that is separate, in addition to, the University's admission procedure. Admission to Morehead State University does not guarantee admission to the Computed Tomography/Magnetic Resonance Program. The number of clinical placement positions limits enrollment. Should the number of qualified applicants exceed the enrollment capacity, the successful applicants with the highest grade point average in the required general education courses, support courses, and radiography courses will be selected.

A. Unconditional acceptance to Morehead State University through the Office of Admissions.  See link above.

B. Completion of the following courses with a minimum grade of “C”. (Some courses can be transferred from other institutions.)

C. More than two failures of pre-radiologic science courses within two complete academic years will result in ineligibility for admission. This includes failure of more than two courses or failures of the same course more than twice. Students with course failure(s) prior to two complete academic years will be considered for admission if the student has demonstrated satisfactory academic progress (“C” or above in required courses) since the course failure(s).

D. A grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher for all required college work.

E. Graduate of the Associate Degree Radiologic Science Program at MSU or other radiography program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. Considerations for non-JRCERT program graduates will be considered on an individual or program basis. Graduates of an approved program may receive an equivalent block credit to satisfy the radiography component.

F. Registered and in good standing with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Radiography. Applicants who are not registered must obtain certification prior to the beginning of the fall semester.

G. Meet health and physical capability requirements established by the Department of Imaging Sciences.

H. Possess current certification in Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (CPR) by the American Heart Association.

Application Procedure

Applications will be accepted beginning in January and must be received by the 1st Monday in April.

A. Submit a complete application packet with the following required materials:

1. Imaging Sciences Admission Application, designating the Computed Tomography/Magnetic Resonance Program or Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program. Applicants applying to both programs must rank the programs into a first and second choice. Entrance will not be granted to both programs. Failure to rank your choices (if applying to both programs) will make your application invalid.

2. Official transcripts documenting all courses required for admission. Students currently enrolled are required to submit spring mid-term grades for consideration. Students attending institutions that do not provide mid-term grades must submit a letter from the radiography program coordinator or individual faculty in general education courses stating the student’s letter grade at the current time for each course. All letters must be submitted on official institutional letterhead. Students must complete required courses with a “C” or better and maintain a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.

3. Copy of course description(s) if course equivalencies are not listed on the transfer credit webpage located at http://www.moreheadstate.edu/registrar/index.aspx?id=3942.

4. Copy of the current American Registry of Radiologic Technologists registration card for radiography. Applicants who are not registered must obtain certification prior to the beginning of the fall semester.

5. Copy of the current American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (Computed Tomography and/or Magnetic Resonance) registration card (if applicable).

6. Copy of the current American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) registration card (if applicable).

Conditions for Enrollment

A. Maintain established health and physical capabilities: (also may be required for retention at the discretion of the faculty). After admission into the program, the Department of Imaging Sciences will provide a health form to be completed by a licensed physician, physician’s assistant, or nurse practitioner.

1. Vision capabilities:
a. Normal or corrected refraction within the range of 20/20 to 20/60
b. Able to distinguish color shade changes

2. Auditory capabilities:
a. Possess normal or corrected hearing ability within 0 to 45-decibel range

3. Tactile capabilities:
a. Possess in at least one hand the ability to perceive temperature change and pulsation and to differentiate between various textures and structures
b. Recognize an object by touching and handling

4. Language capabilities:
a. Possess the ability to verbally communicate

5. Minimal motor capabilities:
a. Grasp securely with two functional upper limbs
b. Push and/or pull moveable objects weighing 100-150 lbs
c. Lift at least 25 lbs. without assistance
d. Stand for long periods of time
e. Walk without assistance of canes, crutches, walkers, and/or humans
f. Reach above shoulders and below waist
g. Twist, bend, stoop/squat, and move quickly

6. Mental health:
a. Possess the ability to adapt to the environment, function in everyday activities, and cope with stressors

7. Freedom from transmittable disease as documented by:
a. Negative PPD and/or chest x-ray within immediate past 12 months
b. Rubella and rubeola antibody test (titer values that indicate immunity) documentation of MMR ( Rubella, Rubeola and Mumps) vaccine
c. Hepatitis B Vaccine series
d. Varicella zoster live-virus vaccine or serologic evidence of immunity
e. Tdap (Tetanus-Diphtheria-Pertussis) vaccine
f. Immunization as recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the U.S. Public Health Service, the Committee on Infectious Disease of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

B. Maintain current certification in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provides (CPR) by the American Heart Association.

C. Clinical education is a mandatory component of the programs. Due to accreditation requirements of the clinical education centers, students are likely to be required to obtain a criminal background check and/or undergo drug testing prior to acceptance to the clinical assignment. The student is responsible for the incurred cost. Any student who fails acceptance to the clinical assignment will be unable to complete the program.

D. Completion of the MR Safety Screening Form.

Note: The MR system has a very strong magnetic field that may be hazardous to individuals entering the MR environment if they have certain metallic, electronic, magnetic, or mechanical implants, devices, or objects.  To perform/assist with MR procedures on patients, students must initially undergo the same screening procedures as patients in order to enter the scan room.  If any of the above is applicable, contact ACC at 606-783-2624.


MAGNETIC RESONANCE SAFETY

The establishment of thorough and effective screening procedures for patients and other individuals is one of the most critical components of a program that guards the safety of all those preparing to undergo magnetic resonance (MR) procedures or to enter the MR environment.  An important aspect of protecting patients and individuals from MR system-related accidents and injuries involves an understanding of the risks associated with the various implants, devices, accessories, and other objects that may cause problems in this setting.  This requires constant attention and diligence to obtain information and documentation about these objects in order to provide the safest MR setting possible. The program faculty at Morehead State University want to provide the students and patients with a safe clinical environment, therefore the program requires students to complete the MR Safety Screening Form prior to acceptance into the program.  This form must be completed by a qualified practitioner.  Any questions or concerns may be addressed by contacting Brandon Hughes, Academic Counseling Coordinator, at 606-783-2624.


 

 

Fees and Expenses

Fees and expenses specific to the program are in addition to those required by MSU. These are subject to change without notification. The students are responsible for the purchase of:

1. dark gray uniforms,

2. white hose (if applicable),

3. white or black clinical shoes,

4. dark gray lab coat,

5. malpractice insurance,

6. laboratory fees,

7. all housing and transportation expenses incurred during clinical internship assignments.

As required, students are also responsible for all fees for:

1. criminal background checks,

2. drug testing,

3. certification examinations, and

4. all applicable course fees.
