According to the 2011 Bureau of Labor statistics (BLS) report, Registered Nurses comprise the greatest number of healthcare professionals with a total employment of approximately 2.6 million jobs. The Registered Nurse (RN) has a panoramic set of responsibilities. The RN is responsible for treating patients, educating patients, families and the public, helping perform and analyze diagnostic tests and administering treatment and medications. The RN will also work to teach patients and their families topics such as diet, exercise, nutrition and self medication administration.
Registered Nurses are employed in a variety of settings. According to the 2011 BLS report, 60% are employed in hospitals, either public or private. RNs are also employed in physician’s offices, home health care services, nursing care facilities and employment services. Some RNs choose to pursue advanced degrees that allow them to practice as Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Educators, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Public Health Nurses or Nurse Anesthetists.
The job outlook for RNs is excellent. According to the BLS report in 2008 2,618,700 were employed. The projected employment in 2018 is 3,200,200, an increase of 581,500 or 22%. Demand will remain high for registered nurses in hospitals, employment services and extended care settings. In addition, there will be an increased demand for registered nurses will be in physician’s offices and home health services, according to the BLS report.
The average starting annual salary for a Registered Nurse in Kentucky is $40,314.

The Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program has limited enrollment on the Morehead and Mt. Sterling campuses. The following criteria are used to determine conditional acceptance to the ADN Program for ADNP applicants and Paramedic to ADN Track applicants:1. American College Test (Enhanced ACT) Score with a mandatory minimum composite score of 20 or higher.2. A. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a scale of 4.0 with a minimum grade of "C" in prerequisite courses required for the Associate Degree Nursing Program. ADNP Students Paramedic to ADN Track StudentsBIOL 234 Human Anatomy & Physiology I See list of prerequisites courses on the reverse side.BIOL 235 Human Anatomy & Physiology II (A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for BIOL 234,ENG 100 Writing I BIOL 235, MATH 135 and ENG 100).Math Core MATH 135, Mathematics for Technical Students,recommended (or 131, 152, 174, 175 or equivalent)B. Applicants with a grade less than "C" in two courses required for the ADNP within the last two years are not eligible for admission.C. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on all work at the University. D. Applicants may be conditionally admitted to the program pending successful completion of prerequisite courses required for admission to the program.E. Paramedic to ADN Track applicants must (1) successfully complete the National Standard Curriculum paramedic course, (2) hold an active and unrestricted national or state certification to practice as a Paramedic, and (3) have the equivalent of one year’s experience as a Paramedic.F. Paramedic to ADN Track applicants must successfully complete (with a minimum grade of "C") all other prerequisite courses prior tocompletion of the NURA 111, Paramedic to ADN Track Transition Course..G. Paramedic to ADN Track applicants must seek admission into the ADNP within one year after completion of the NURA 111, Paramedic to ADN Transition Course, with a grade of "C" or higher. Please refer to the Paramedic to ADN Track Course Sequence.3. Final acceptance will be dependent on maintaining course grades and grade point average as well as meeting CPR and Health requirements by established dates. Compliance with the Technical Performance Standards is also required. 4. Clinical education is a mandatory component of the ADNP. Due to accreditation requirements of the clinical education centers,students will be required to obtain a criminal background check and/or undergo drug testing prior to acceptance to the clinical assignment.The student is responsible for any incurred cost. Any student who fails acceptance to the clinical assignment will be unable to complete theprogram. Conditions for Enrollment1. Students may be assigned to clinical practice areas other than those in the immediate area, requiring traveling some distance from campus.Transportation to and from these settings is the responsibility of the student.2. Clinical experiences and formal lectures may be required during various hours of the day, evening, and night. 3. Students have the responsibility for the cost incurred by enrollment in the nursing program. This cost includes CPR, immunizations, professional malpractice insurance, criminal background check, academic materials, testing fees, clothing, and equipment.Application DeadlinesAdmission criteria and procedures are reviewed on an annual basis. It is the applicant’s responsibility to verify current application criteria and procedures prior to the application deadline.
Application for Fall admission into the Associate Degree Nursing Program and the Paramedic to ADN Track is made in the spring semester prior to fall classes. The application deadline date is the last Friday in March. Application for Spring admission is made in the fall semester prior to spring classes. The application deadline date is the last Friday in October.
