What does it mean to be a VOLUNTEER?

To VOLUNTEER is to choose to act in recognition of a need, with an attitude of social responsibility and without concern for monetary profit, going beyond one's basic obligations. (By the People, A History of Americans as Volunteers, Susan J. Ellis and Katherine H. Campbell; Energize, Inc., Philadelphia, PA, 2005).

VOLUNTEERISM is the opportunity to engage as a community member and citizen with and in service to other members of a given community in an effort to make the world a better place. (idealist.org/kt/voloverview.html)

What are the goals of the Volunteer Center?

To provide students the opportunity to develop:

  • Into civic leaders both on campus and in the community;
  • A sense of belonging and to gain friendships and professional contacts;
  • Civic responsibility through involvement in meaningful service that benefits both the individual and the community whether local or global
  • Skills both existing and acquired in a real world setting which will enhance your self confidence and your resume;

To build a strong relationship between MSU and its service region through sustainable community partnerships.

Provide a “Service Hour Resume” for inclusion as a valuable tool in our student’s job portfolio by tracking their completed hours and areas of service.
