Take a few hours to take a hike before spring semester classes start. We'll throw a few essentials in a backpack and hit the trails behind campus for a relaxing hike. If you've wanted to hike the trails behind campus but didn't have someone to go with or didn't want to get lost, this is your chance to do it! This will be the first in a series of day hikes throughout the semester. Participation in the day hikes and workshops is recommended to anyone planning on signing up for the spring break backpacking trip.
What to Bring: a small backpack, comfortable hiking shoes, a lightweight fleece or jacket, a water bottle, a small snack, and a friend. Remember to bring as little cotton as possible (wool or synthetic fabrics are best)
Where to Meet: Outdoor Adventures room in the Rec Center (right by Eagle Lake Apartments)

This is the second trip in a series of local day hikes. As a group, we can explore the trails that run throughout the forest behind campus. These day hikes are a great opportunity to prepare for the Spring Break Backpacking trip, or to just enjoy an afternoon outside. All local day hikes are designed to allow anyone to participate.

Mammoth Cave - February 15 & 16
Price: $50
Join Outdoor Adventures on a trip to the longest cave system in the world: Mammoth Cave National Park. We'll camp out Friday night, and take a cave tour, guided by the National Park staff. We'll camp out Friday night, explore the caves on Saturday afternoon, and be back Saturday night.
Here's what they have to say about the Intro to Caving Tour:
Want to really go caving? Not sure if spelunking is for you? Try this short small-group caving challenge to discover things about the cave, and yourself.
• 3½ hours, 2 miles. Total stairs: 280+. Elevation change: 250' •
Chest or hip measurement must not exceed 42 inches; if you are larger, you cannot physically pass through the crawlspaces.
High-top, over-the-ankle lace-up boots, with lug or deeply treaded soles, are required. No low-cut hiking or athletic shoes allowed.
You will not be allowed to participate in the tour if you are not wearing proper footwear—No exceptions.
Gym shorts and t-shirts are recommended for wear under coveralls. Please bring extra pair of tennis shoes or sandals for use during boot decontamination at the end of the tour. All equipment and outerwear provided; no personal caving equipment allowed.
Difficulty: Strenuous.

This is the third trip in a series of local day hikes. Explore the trails around the local area and enjoy some time outside and away from stress. This is the final chance to hike with us before the Spring Break Backpacking trip, so pull yourself away from midterms for a few hours of fun!

Spring Break Backpacking - March 15-21
Price: $95
Spring Break provides a great opportunity to do something new, get away from your regular routine, and enjoy time with friends. Why not spend the week in one of the most beautiful parts of the country? Outdoor Adventures is heading to Maryland to hike a section of the Appalachian Trail from Pennsylvania to Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. Trail shelters and tents will be home for 5 nights, ending at the Hiker Hostel just outside Harper's Ferry.
Remember to buy your boots soon and break them in!!

Rock Climbing - April 6 & 7
Price: $25
The Red River Gorge is one of the most popular rock climbing destinations in the country, and it's right in our backyard! On Saturday, Outdoor Adventures staff will teach you the basics of rock climbing and give everyone a chance to climb routes of varying difficulty. Rain or shine, we'll be getting on real rock! We'll camp out on Saturday night, and get right back on the rock on Sunday. With thousands of climbs to choose from, this trip will be great for beginners and experienced climbers alike.

Canoeing is a lifetime fitness activity that anyone can participate in. Whether you've never been in a canoe or you're an experienced paddler, take some time away from civilization and see what the rivers and lakes of Kentucky have to offer. This trip includes 2 days of canoeing and 1 night camping.

The is the final trip in our Spring day hike series. The weekend before finals can be a stressful time. Reward yourself for all the hard work and studying with a short hike to clear your mind, spend some time with friends, and take in the sights on some National Forest trails, right behind campus.

WORKSHOPS
This workshop focuses on specific techniques of land navigation using map & compass, GPS, and natural Take advantage of this great learning opportunity. Become familiar with navigating using maps and compasses. Are you interested in going on OA trips but want to be more comfortable navigating and understanding maps?

Spending time in the natural environment can an incredibly powerful and rewarding experience. An important part of that experience is learning how to be respectful of the environment. This seminar will discuss the 7 principles used by Leave No Trace™ to help visitors in the outdoors minimize the negative impacts to the environment.
