MAT for Secondary (8-12) and Middle Grades (5-9)

WHO QUALIFIES FOR THE MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING?

The Master of Arts in Teaching Program (MAT) is an alternative certification program approved by the Kentucky Educational Professional Standards Board (EPSB). This program is tailored to meet the needs of college graduates with no previous teacher training who wish to obtain secondary and/or middle grades certification and a master's degree. In Kentucky, middle grade teachers are certified to teach in one or two specific fields of study chosen from the following four areas: English/language arts, science, social studies, or mathematics. Those who do not have a major or minor in one of those areas may have to take course work beyond the outlined curriculum. This will be determined through a transcript evaluation by an MAT Coordinator.  The secondary certification program provides opportunities for candidates possessing a baccalaureate degree in biology, chemistry, earth science, health, physics, mathematics, social studies, English, Spanish, French, or business to attain secondary teacher certification and a master's degree.
