The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program at Morehead State University is an Area of Concentration in the Imaging Sciences baccalaureate degree program. Sonography is the use of sound waves to generate an image for the assessment and diagnosis of various medical conditions. Sonography is commonly associated with obstetrics and the use of ultrasound imaging during pregnancy, but this technology has many other applications in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions throughout the body. Along with lecture courses, the program provides "hands-on" opportunities in state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and during clinical assignments at health care agencies associated with the program. Graduates may be eligible to sit for the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers' (ARDMS) national certifying examinations in the areas of sonographic physics and instrumentation, abdomen and obstetrics/gynecology. The program prepares graduates who seek employment in hospitals, imaging centers, and physicians' offices as Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.
The program has a selective admission process and limited enrollment. Students are admitted once a year (April), with classes beginning in the second summer session of each year. The qualified applicant must be a radiographer (registry-eligible or registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) and have completed all prerequisites prior to entry (see ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS for additional information.)
Following official acceptance, the program consists of 13 months (full-time) of didactic coursework and clinical practice averaging 30 - 36 hours per week. The student will begin courses during Summer II. All classes and labs are scheduled Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, including a lunch break. During the first eight weeks of the spring and fall semesters, the student will attend classes and labs Monday through Thursday and will attend clinicals on Fridays. During the second eight weeks of each fall and spring semester, the student will be assigned to a clinical affiliate on Monday through Friday for 40 hours per week. A third and fourth clinical is required during the summer near the end of the curriculum with the student attending Monday through Friday for 40 hours per week. The total number of class and lab hours in the sonography program is 456, while 1,016 are required for clinical. This may vary slightly each year due to the University's academic calendar.
The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program, in conjunction with the Department and University's Mission, is committed to preparing graduates to function as competent entry level sonographers and to provide a foundation for continued lifetime learning designated in diagnostic medical sonography.
The student will: 1.Be prepared to practice as competent entry level sonographers in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.
Students manipulate equipment controls to provide optimum image quality.
Students recognize and differentiate various pathologies.
Students exhibit professional and ethical behavior during sonographic procedures.
Students complete the diagnostic medical sonography program and gain employment.
Graduates pass the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers credentialing examinations.
2. Integrate scientific knowledge and technical skills with effective communication methods to provide quality care and useful diagnostic information.
Students practice effective oral communication skills.
Students practice effective written communication skills.
3. Employ critical thinking.
Students analyze sonographic principles and apply the information.
Students demonstrate competence in the performance of diagnostic medical sonography procedures.

Admission to Morehead State University (see MSU admission requirements).
The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program has a selective admission policy that is separate, in addition to, the University's admission procedure. Admission to Morehead State University does not guarantee admission to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program. The number of clinical placement positions limits enrollment. Should the number of qualified applicants exceed the enrollment capacity, the successful applicants with the highest grade point average in the required general education courses, support courses, and radiography courses will be selected.
A. Unconditional acceptance to Morehead State University through the Office of Admissions. See link above.
B. Completion of the following courses with a minimum grade of “C”. (Some courses can be transferred from other institutions.)

C. More than two failures of pre-radiologic science courses within two complete academic years will result in ineligibility for admission. This includes failure of more than two courses or failures of the same course more than twice. Students with course failure(s) prior to two complete academic years will be considered for admission if the student has demonstrated satisfactory academic progress (“C” or above in required courses) since the course failure(s)
D. A grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher for all required college work.
E. Graduate of the Associate Degree Radiologic Science Program at MSU or other radiography program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. Considerations for non-JRCERT program graduates will be considered on an individual or program basis. Graduates of an approved program may receive an equivalent block credit to satisfy the radiography component.
F. Registered and in good standing with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Radiography. Applicants who are not registered must obtain certification prior to the beginning of the fall semester.
G. Meet health and physical capability requirements established by the Department of Imaging Sciences.
H. Possess current certification in Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (CPR) by the American Heart Association.
Applications will be accepted beginning in January and must be received by the 1st Monday in April.
A. Submit a complete application packet with the following required materials:
1. Imaging Sciences Admission Application designating the Computed Tomography/Magnetic Resonance Program or Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program. Applicants applying to both programs must rank the programs into a first and second choice. Entrance will not be granted to both programs.
2. Official transcripts documenting all courses required for admission. Students currently enrolled are required to submit spring mid-term grades for consideration. Students attending institutions that do not provide mid-term grades must submit a letter from the radiography program coordinator or individual faculty in general education courses stating the student’s letter grade at the current time for each course. All letters must be submitted on official institutional letterhead. Students must complete required courses with a “C” or better and maintain a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
3. Copy of course description(s) if course equivalencies are not listed on the transfer credit webpage located at http://www.moreheadstate.edu/registrar/index.aspx?id=3942.
4. Copy of the current American Registry of Radiologic Technologists registration card for radiography. Applicants who are not registered must obtain certification prior to the beginning of the fall semester.
5. Copy of the current American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (Computed Tomography and/or Magnetic Resonance) registration card (if applicable).
6. Copy of the current American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) registration card (if applicable).

Note: If applying to both the DMS and CT/MR Options of the BS in Imaging Sciences, you must rank your choice. Please select which program is your first and second preference. Due to accreditation requirements of the clinical education centers, students are required to obtain a criminal background check and/or undergo drug testing prior to acceptance to the clinical assignment. The student is responsible for the incurred cost. Any student who fails acceptance to the clinical assignment will be unable to complete the program.
An Estimated Cost of Attendance for a student at Morehead State University can be found on the Office of Financial Aid Web page. An approximate cost for the DMS Program (excluding pre-requisites) is $10,000. Fees and expenses specific to the program are in addition to those required by MSU. These are subject to change without notification. The students are responsible for the purchase of:
1. dark gray uniforms,2. white hose (if applicable),3. white or black clinical shoes,4. dark gray lab coat,5. malpractice insurance,6. laboratory fees,7. all housing and transportation expenses incurred during clinical internship assignments.
As required, students are also responsible for all fees for:
1. criminal background checks,2. drug testing,3. certification examinations, and4. all applicable course fees.
