BioEric Thomas, a 1981 graduate of Pikeville High School, has earned degrees from both Eastern Kentucky University and Morehead State University. Eric holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Law Enforcement from EKU and a Bachelor’s of Science in Secondary Science Education with an Area of Concentration in Earth Science from MSU. Eric also has earned his Master of Arts in Education, along with a Physics-teaching minor, and a Rank I in Education.
Eric has sixteen years’ experience in both formal and informal education. He has taught Science at both the secondary and post secondary levels, and spent three years as a Regional Science Consultant for the Kentucky Department of Education. He has been chosen to pilot educational programs in his classroom for both NASA and the National Weather service. In 1999 Eric was selected as 1 of 15 educators nationally to serve as a Cassini Educator Fellow by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory to conduct educational outreach for NASA’s Cassini Mission to Saturn. In 2000 Eric was again selected by NASA/JPL as one of 75 educators nationally for its Solar System Educator program to train teachers to use educational materials developed in conjunction with its solar system exploration missions.
Eric has served as an instructor for both Morehead State University and Big Sandy Community and Technical College. As the Assistant Director of the East Kentucky Science Center in Prestonsburg, Kentucky from 2002 to 2006 he assisted in the development and operation of the Center’s planetarium and educational programs. Upon becoming the EKSC’s Executive Director in 2006 Eric oversaw the operation of the EKSC and guided its progress and programs through 2009.
Eric has served as a board member of several organizations. His service included terms on the boards of the Prestonsburg Renaissance on Main Association, the Floyd County Chamber of Commerce, the Morehead State University Prestonsburg Advisory Board, and the Kentucky Science Teachers Association. Currently Eric serves as Past President of the Kentucky Science teachers association and as a member of the Morehead State Public Radio Community Advisory Board.
Eric joined the staff of the Morehead State University Space Science Center in May of 2009 where he is the Director of the Star Theater. He currently resides in Prestonsburg, Kentucky with his wife Denise and their two cats “Sylvester” and “Tweetie”.
