Bio

Image - Gold Square "I believe that each person possesses an artistic gift.  If you love theatre and have a desire to grow that artistic gift; at Morehead State University Theatre Department, you are given the tools to develop the foundation needed to build a career in theatre."

Octavia Biggs-Fleck is Program Director of Lexington Children’s Theatre’s Shooting Stars Youtheatre (SSYT), a satellite performing arts program for Elliott and Rowan Counties. She is also Lecturer of Theatre at Morehead State University, Music, Theatre and Dance Department (MSU/MTD) and Director for The Little Company, where she prepares college students to perform touring productions and teach drama workshops in middle and high schools across the state of Kentucky. An active member in community arts, she serves on the board of directors for the Morehead Theatre Guild and coaches Rowan County Senior High School speech and drama students.

For Lexington Children’s Theatre’s SSYT, she has directed in Morehead James and the Giant Peach, Charlotte’s Web, Still Life with Iris, Pinocchio, Snow White, Alice in Wonderland, and most recently, Sideways Stories from Wayside School. She has also directed for LCT’s Tour Company A Laura Ingalls’ Wilder Christmas, Katarina the Clever, The Legend of John Henry, and The Princess Who Lost Her Hair. Along with directing, she teaches residencies in every 3rd and 5th grade classroom in Elliott and Rowan County public schools, and offers performance workshops during school and summer holidays, after school, and on occasional Saturdays. Recently, SSYT was awarded a 2.5 million dollar endowment from the W. Paul and Lucille Caudill Little Foundation. Dividends from this generous endowment provide yearly funding to help ensure SSYT programming continues in perpetuity for youth throughout Elliott, Rowan and neighboring Eastern Kentucky counties.

At The Little Company, Octavia has directed Lily Plants a Garden and Mister E of Imagination: Tales of Edgar Allan Poe. She has co-written an extensive study guide for teachers to use in their classrooms before and after they see The Little Company’s performances and teaches workshops with materials tied to the Kentucky Standards for Arts and Humanities.

Immediately after graduating with her BA in theatre from MSU, Octavia was one of two actors nationwide accepted to the National Shakespeare Conservatory in New York City. While at the Conservatory, she studied under Broadway actor Jimmy Tripp, Royal Shakespeare Director Mario Siletti, and dance legend Joan Evans. A few of her New York stage credits include title roles in: Dark Lady of the Sonnets performed at the William Redfield Theatre; The Taming of the Shrew at the National Shakespeare Company; The Rivals at the Conservatory Theatre; and Life on Pluto at the Trocadero Theatre.

She wrote, produced, and directed a one-woman show entitled Ties to the Homeland. She developed Voices from the Mountains, a compilation of woman’s poetry and short stories, which was performed for the Jimmy Carter Habitat for Humanity and the Kentucky Educational Television Network.

Several of her acting credits in Kentucky include Annie Sullivan in The Miracle Worker, Mrs. Lincoln in The Last of Mrs. Lincoln, as well as roles in the ensemble productions, The Cemetery Club, Steele Magnolias, and Beautiful Bodies. A few of her favorite directing credits include Annie, Annouilhs’ Antigone, A Company of Wayward Saints, The Wizard of Oz, The Rainmaker, and Always, Patsy Cline.

Octavia resides in Morehead, KY and enjoys taking long walks with her dog Tucker.
