21st Century Center for Manufacturing Systems

The face of Kentucky's business community is changing and manufacturing, engineering and technology-based fields will be pivotal in developing a "new economy" for the eastern portion of the Commonwealth. Morehead State University has established the 21st Century Center for Manufacturing Systems to help meet the employment challenges of the region.

The first of its kind in the state, the center is designed to allow students in the Department of Engineering & Technology Management access to hands-on learning opportunities with industry-leading technology. MSU's 21st Century Center for Manufacturing Systems will help propel the industry in our region to a new level. The Center is providing exciting opportunities for generations of students and ushering in the next level of global manufacturing and technology in the state of Kentucky.

"The 21st Century Center for Manufacturing Systems has enhanced our potential to teach cutting-edge technologies, conduct applied research in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and aid technology transfer from the University to industries which will result in economic development in the region," said Dr. Ahmad Zargari, Associate Dean of the School of Engineering and Information Systems.

Morehead State University is committed to expanding and modernizing its programming and facilities to meet the needs of a changing economy and job market through the 21st Century Center for Manufacturing Systems. The University has a committed industrial advisory board composed of employers with a demonstrated need for qualified engineers and technologists. With their guidance, MSU is developing a new academic model enriched by scholarship and entrepreneurship -- one that will support the synergistic integration of mechanical, electrical, computer and control systems technology in product and process design. The new model will:

  1. Implement a multidisciplinary curriculum based on systems design principles,
  2. Incorporate the 21st Century Center for Manufacturing Systems, a new research and teaching center to provide experiential learning opportunities to students and practitioners, and
  3. Build collaborative partnerships with regional industries.

The 21st Century Center for Manufacturing Systems represents Morehead State's growing commitment to creating new, innovative economies and opportunities throughout Eastern Kentucky. The overarching goal of the center is to prepare students for 21st Century jobs by developing specialized interdisciplinary science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs. The center, in collaboration with industry, provides opportunities for students to work on applied engineering projects that integrate mechanical, electrical, computer and control system components. The result will be a higher number of skilled graduates, many of whom prefer to seek jobs within the region. This highly skilled workforce should attract new businesses to Eastern Kentucky, provide their employers with a strong competitive edge and will possess the capacity to start new enterprises leading to future job creation.
