Mr. Merritt likes to create a comfortable habitat for the uncomfortable practice of public speaking. He encourages his students to take risks, share themselves with their peers and audiences, and do each with integrity and honesty. He also knows failure is nothing more than an opportunity. Every day is, indeed, a do over.

He engages with his community socially and politically, is a volunteer with non-profits in the state and local area, and is on the board of the local recycling center, all of which have given him experience in the art of rhetoric and public speaking.

He has also participated in and created many works of video and film that have broadcast all over the world and on Kentucky Educational Television (KET).
