MORE ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Since the late 1800s, Morehead State University has evolved from one modest makeshift classroom into the high-tech world of the 21st century. Today, MSU enrolls more than 9,000 students from Kentucky, 42 states, and 37 nations.  The Department of Music, Theatre and Dance is part of the School of the Arts within the Caudill College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

The Department of Music, Theatre and Dance, a widely recognized and distinguished center of excellence, has an impressive history of serving and enriching the region since the 1920s. As part of a great university within the atmosphere of a small community, the department enrolls nearly 300 majors that hail from several states and foreign countries and employs a distinguished faculty of more than 36 instructors with extensive credentials and professional expertise. Department alumni are recognized artists, scholars, teachers, and leaders in arts and arts education with noteworthy achievements regionally, nationally, and internationally.

As an accredited institutional member of NASM since 1965 and NAST since 2004, MSU offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Theater, Theatre with a Teaching Certificate, Music Education, Jazz Studies, and Performance. A Bachelor of Arts in Music (Traditional Music) and a Minor in Traditional Music are offered in conjunction with the MSU’s Kentucky Center for Traditional Music. Private music study is offered on orchestral and keyboard instruments, and voice, conducting, guitar and traditional instruments. Musical training and performance opportunities are also provided to students who are not planning musical careers.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Spencer Bolt - Thumbnail
Jazz Studies Major, Morehead, KY "My father, for as long as I can remember, has always told me "from the heart, in everything you do." Morehead State, from the professors side, appears to follow the same philosophy. Ever since I started school, my professors have been by my side every step of the way with advice, constructive criticism, and guidance. MSU was a very good choice for me and I feel I will only mature and grow as I continue my education."
