2013 Contemporary Piano Residency / Southeastern Composers' League

 
The Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance presents the 2013 Contemporary Piano Residency in conjunction with the Southeastern Composers League Forum on March 1 and 2, 2013.  
 
The “Southeastern Composers’ League" (SCL) is an organization dedicated to supporting the composition and performance of contemporary art music by composers living in the southeastern United States, including Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.  Many of the members fill distinguished faculty positions throughout the region's universities and educational institutions.
 
This event will consist of 5 concerts of new music performed by MSU music faculty and students.  Concerts begin at 11:30 am Friday, featuring MSU’s own Concert Choir, Percussion Ensemble, Baird Winds, tuba quartet, and woodwind and brass faculty and students.  The Friday 3 pm concert features the Ambrym saxophone quartet, and MSU vocal, brass, and piano faculty.  Friday night’s concert at 8 pm is devoted to the Contemporary Piano Festival, featuring guest composer Dr. Brian Bevelander.  Concerts continue at 1 pm and 4 pm on Saturday with more music for voice, piano, flute, clarinet, tuba, horn, saxophone, jazz piano, and electronics.  All concerts will be held in Duncan Recital Hall in Baird Music Hall, and admission is free. 
 
The Contemporary Piano Residency concert is hosted by Dr. Paul Taylor, Associate Professor of Piano.  SCL concerts are hosted by Dr. Chialing Hsieh, Instructor of Music in Piano Accompanying.

Dr. Brian Bevelander is a composer/pianist, born in Boston Massachusetts and educated at the New England Conservatory of Music, Hartt College of Music, Boston University, and West Virginia University. His principal composition teachers include Thomas Canning at West Virginia University and Hugo Norden at Boston University.
 
Besides teaching composition and piano at Heidelberg University, he has been the recipient of several composition awards, residencies and fellowships. Many of his electroacoustic compositions have enjoyed a number of performances and broadcasts in Europe as well as the United States. In addition to his electroacoustic compositions, his works include chamber and orchestral music, concertos and solo pieces.
 
Dr. Bevelander’s composition students have been accepted at many of America’s most highly regarded graduate programs and have achieved professional success. He originated and for many years coordinated Heidelberg’s annual New Music Festival, which has brought to campus internationally recognized composers and performers.
