Profile

Dr. Hare, a regional analyst specializing in geospatial technologies, investigates the interplay of social, economic, and political forces across the landscape and through time. Over several centuries, he explores these issues in two different historical contexts, contemporary central Appalachia and ancient Mesoamerica. Dr. Hare’s technical specialties are the use of geospatial technologies for the collection of various forms of spatial data and the study of geographical patterns of human behavior. He is experienced in collecting, processing, and analyzing spatially distributed data, which he uses to analyze social, political, and economic changes.

In central Appalachia and Kentucky, he studies health disparities, healthcare accessibility, and health outcomes using spatial statistics. He directs archaeological surveys and mapping in Mexico using various technologies, including GNSS, airborne and UAV-borne laser scanning, and aerial and terrestrial photogrammetry. His experience as an economic anthropologist conducting regional analyses enhances his research of social, political, and economic processes, whether exploring contemporary disparities in health outcomes across central Appalachia or the transformation of ancient societies in Mexico and Central America. 

He recently published articles in the "Journal of Anthropological Archaeology," "PLOS ONE," "Open Archaeology," and "Historical Archaeology." He has also published chapters in recent volumes, including "Building an Archaeology of Maya Urbanism: Planning and Flexibility in the American Tropics" and "Her Cup for Sweet Cacao." He co-edited the volume "Settlement, Economy, and Society at Mayapan, Yucatan, Mexico."

Political economy, spatial statistics, medical anthropology, social landscapes
