Daxson Lewis

Biography

Daxson Lewis, a Morehead State University’s Traditional Music Studies program graduate, is dedicated to preserving and advancing the rich heritage of American traditional music through education and outreach.

His teaching is informed by a lifelong connection to the traditional music community and extensive professional experience. He offers students and faculty invaluable insight into the history and evolution of these musical traditions.

Daxson has toured across the United States and internationally, performing with artists such as Grand Ole Opry members Dailey & Vincent, David Parmley, and The McLain Family Band, alongside whom he was inducted into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame in 2024. His global performances have taken him to Canada, Denmark, Ireland, China, Hungary, and Slovakia.

He has made numerous appearances on the Grand Ole Opry, the historic Carter Family Fold, PBS’s Song of the Mountains, and the nationally syndicated Woodsongs Old-Time Radio Hour. He has been a featured soloist with symphony orchestras.

Daxson is actively involved in the International Bluegrass Music Association and the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America, participating as a performer, exhibitor, and presenter. He also contributes to efforts promoting bluegrass in higher education, working closely with the International Bluegrass Music Foundation.

As Director of the Kentucky Center for Traditional Music, Daxson is dedicated to expanding and enhancing the internationally recognized BA of Traditional Music Studies program. Through innovative curriculum development, hands-on learning opportunities, and professional industry connections, he creates new avenues for students and faculty to grow as musicians, educators, and industry professionals. Under his leadership, the Center continues to evolve, equipping the next generation of traditional musicians with the skills and experience needed to thrive in a dynamic and ever-changing industry.
