Biography
Jeanne Petsch received a B.A. from Iowa State University (1985), M.A. from the University of Northern Iowa (1987), M.A.T. from the University of South Carolina (1993) and Ph.D. from Florida State University (1998). She works primarily with pre-service art teachers, and her approach to teaching is humanistic and experiential. Her ethnographic research explores the creative experiences of artists and students in P-12 and post secondary settings and how we discover meaning through creative activity and our encounters in the world. She conducts research as a participant-observer, working on-site in a variety of unique settings including alternative schools, rural schools and urban schools. She has also done extensive work in schools in Saint Petersburg, Russia and the surrounding region. Her research has been presented at conferences and at colleges and universities in the U.S. and abroad and has been published in a variety books, scholarly journals and catalogs. Jeanne is also a practicing artist who has exhibited her work in regional, national and international venues. Her current creative work is an exploration of found objects and collage, and how these objects and materials become meaningful through our experiences with them. She explores the object's place and purpose in past and present time, how its meaning changes through re-contextualization, and her own continually changing realization of the object and its meaning.
