Former WMKY general Manager dies
Former WMKY and Morehead State Public Radio General Manager Larry Netherton, 75, of Shelbyville died Friday, March 31, in Louisville.
When WMKY signed on the air in 1965, he was there doing sports and news during the four-hour day. During his more than 30-year career at the station, he wore many hats, including serving as general manager for 21 years. In 1996, he returned to full-time teaching in the then-Department of Communications and retired a year later. A news production booth in the studios of MSPR within Breckinridge Hall is named in honor of Netherton.
A two-time MSU graduate, Netherton received his bachelor’s degree in 1967 and master’s degree in 1969.
He was a member of the First Christian Church in Morehead. He was a patron of the Shelby County Community Theatre. He was an advocate for the environment, wildlife and civil rights and liberties.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Jo Martin Netherton, Shelbyville; daughter, Ashley Netherton, Shelbyville; sister, Brenda Fuqua (Jim), Bowling Green; and sister in law, Jane Martin, Shelbyville.
There will be no services at this time. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
