Griffith is recipient of Amos Alexander Peeff Memorial Scholarship
The Morehead State University Foundation has announced the establishment of the Amos Alexander Peeff Memorial Scholarship. Whitney Hallie Nicole Griffith of Grayson is the first recipient of the Peeff Memorial Scholarship.
Griffith is the daughter of Christopher Newman and Rachel Moore. A graduate of East Carter High School, she plans to major in space science at MSU and pursue a career as a satellite engineer.
A member of Upward Bound since 2015, Griffith was nominated for the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists Award of Excellence and received awards in physics and research. She was a member of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), French Honor Society, Art Club and Drama Club.
The scholarship was established by William and Fredda Moody, relatives of the Peeff family. The Moodys wanted to create the opportunity of an education for an MSU Upward Bound student to honor Peeff’s memory.
Peeff was born in 1997 and moved with his family to the Flemingsburg area as a child. He attended Fleming County High School graduating in 2015 and went on to attend community college in Maysville and Jefferson County. Peeff passed away in 2016.
Prior to college, he participated in and completed the MSU Upward Bound Program. He loved the Upward Bound program at MSU and looked forward every summer to the time spent there learning new concepts and encouraging his friends, acquaintances and even strangers.
“The Upward Bound Program was very special to Amos,” said Moody. “We wanted to do something special to honor his memory and it seemed most fitting to help Upward Bound students. It is our hope that this scholarship will reward and encourage students who are willing to work hard and pursue their dream, whatever that dream may be.”
