Special programs to air on MSPR
Morehead State Public Radio (MSPR) will celebrate the July 4 holiday with special programs.
“Best of Independence Day” will air at 9 a.m. The show will feature the best patriotic performances of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Songs include "America, the Dream Goes On,” “Yankee Doodle Dandy," "Battle Hymn of the Republic," "Rally 'Round the Flag" and other patriotic songs.
“July 4 with Leroy Anderson and the Boston Pops” will follow at 10 a.m. The radio special features Leroy Anderson, America’s most popular light music composer, and the Boston Pops Orchestra, which premiered many of his short orchestral miniatures. The special explores how the two came together to make music that will be remembered for generations.
At 11 a.m., “Innovation Hub 4th of July Special” will be broadcasted. At a time of year when people reflect on the birth of our country, it is good to consider how we got here. In this hour-long offering, Innovation Hub questions some of our long-held assumptions about democracy, explores how American geography shapes who we are, and goes looking for the American dream in Canada.
“2017 United States Air Force Band Jazz Heritage Radio Series” will air at noon. The special will feature the USAF Airmen of Note. Throughout its long history, the Airmen of Note has regularly performed and recorded with the leading artists in the jazz world. In fact, the list of guest artists featured with the Note reads like a "who's who" of the jazz industry. Stationed at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington, D.C., it is one of six musical ensembles that comprise The U.S. Air Force Band. Created in 1950 to continue the tradition of Maj. Glenn Miller's Army Air Corps dance band, the current band consists of 18 active duty Airmen musicians including one vocalist.
At 7 p.m., “Ray Davies – Americana” will be broadcast. As lead singer and songwriter of The Kinks, the iconic rock singer-songwriter has inspired generations of musicians. In the one hour radio special hosted by Gabby Parsons, hear songs from Davies’ latest album “Americana,” inspired by a book of the same name and including thoughts on what America means to him.
“Mavis Staples the All-Star Concert Celebration” will air at 8 p.m. Recorded live in concert on November 19, 2014 at Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre, an all-star lineup honors the legendary Mavis Staples and her 60 year career. Joining Mavis Staples on stage are Gregg Allman, Eric Church, Patty Griffin, Glen Hansard, Emmylou Harris, Michael McDonald, Taj Mahal, Buddy Miller, Aaron Neville and Bonnie Raitt.
