Doran receives Angelicchio Memorial Scholarship

Doran-M.jpgThe Morehead State University Foundation along with the Morehead Area Chi Omega Alumni Chapter members have announced that Shelby Doran of Burlington is the recipient of the Liza Angelicchio Memorial Scholarship.

Doran, a senior, plans to complete her degree in nursing. This past summer, she spent more than 400 hours doing an internship at the VA hospital in Lexington.

She is the daughter of Robert and Patricia Doran. Doran met Angelicchio in the fall of 2013.

“It was easy to notice how much Liza could light up a room,” wrote Doran. “Without the opportunities through Greek Life, Morehead State and the inspiration from Liza and other alumni, I believe I would not be the confident woman that I am today.”

She had logged countless hours of philanthropy towards the Make-A-Wish Foundation and community service for the city of Morehead. Doran served on the executive board of Chi Omega for two years in a row, including serving as president in 2016.

A few years ago, the Chi Omega chapter was faced with the challenging situation of having a sister, Liza Angelicchio, who was diagnosed with cancer. She needed a bone marrow donor. The chapter hosted several events to promote “Be the Match” operated by the National Marrow Donor Program and the entire Greek community promoted #LizaStrong.

In 2013, Angelicchio received a bone-marrow transplant. Despite some improvements, she suffered several setbacks, including an extremely rare complication from the bone marrow transplant. She lost her battle on July 9, 2016.

To honor her life, her love for everything Morehead State, Chi Omega and the Greek community, the Morehead Area Chi Omega Alumni Chapter started the scholarship in Liza’s memory with the financial assistance of Liza’s friends and family.

The scholarship is a one-time award and will be awarded to a new recipient annually pending available funding.
