State Farm donates 2.5 K to MSU’s Build-A-Bed project

Morehead State University accepted a donation of $2,500 from State Farm Insurance and local agent Stephen W. Barker of Morehead for the Build-A-Bed project.

“This donation will make a drastic impact on our ability to provide even more beds to children in Eastern Kentucky that do not have a bed of their own. As the project grows every year we receive more applications from children in our service region. As far as we know, Build-A-Bed is the only program providing beds to families in need in our region, therefore, there is a huge need. We appreciate State Farm for enabling us to continue this worthy project,” said Mary Claire Williams, program director for MSUCorps/AmeriCorps.

On hand for the presentation were Barker and Williams.

Last year, MSUCorps along with its partners built 256 beds for children in PK-12 who are forced to sleep on floors, on couches, in beds with multiple other children or with other family members.

Gifts are accepted throughout the year and in April volunteers donate their time to construct the beds.

The project has grown each year and impacts children in Bath, Bourbon, Boyd, Bracken, Breathitt, Carter, Clark, Elliott, Fleming, Floyd, Greenup, Harrison, Johnson, Knott, Lawrence, Lee, Letcher, Lewis, Magoffin, Martin, Mason, Menifee, Montgomery, Morgan, Nicholas, Pike, Powell, Robertson, Rowan and Wolfe counties.

Build-A-Bed provides not only beds but also a bedtime bag including pillow, sheets, blanket, book, night light, alarm clock and a hygiene kit. Though more than half of the build is funded through in-kind donations by area businesses, money is needed as well and you can help.

Bed sponsorship is $200.

Any donation is appreciated. Checks can be made to Build-A-Bed and mailed to: MSUCorps, Morehead State University, 201 Education Services Building, Morehead, Ky., 40351.

MSUCorps partners with outreach groups including: Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), Center for Adult Education and College Access (AECA), Educational Talent Search, Gateway House Homeless Shelter and Frenchburg Job Corps CCC.
