Li’s work selected for anniversary edition of ‘Watercolor Artist’
“Watercolor Artist” selected a watercolor painting titled “Girls on a Date” by Morehead State University’s Dongfeng Li, associate professor of art and design, as one of 25 exceptional watercolors during the last 25 years for the magazine's 25th anniversary.
A nationally acclaimed artist in Oriental brush, watercolors, pastel portraits and figure painting, Li joined MSU's art faculty in 2007. He began his art career in his native China. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Tianjin College of Fine Arts College in Tianjin, China. He earned a master degree in of fine arts from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and a master of art education degree from the University of South Alabama.
He previously taught at Webster University in St. Louis.
Li’s watercolor painting titled “Out of the Darkness and Into the Light” was accepted by the exhibition jurors for inclusion in the 147th American Watercolor Society Annual International Exhibition in New York. With his inclusion in the exhibition, Li became a signature member of the American Watercolor Society.
He has won many national awards including the “IDE Memorial Award” American Watercolor Society Annual International Exhibition, New York, 2008; First Place Award for Kentucky Watercolor Society Annual Aqueous Exhibition in 2012, 2015 and 2016; First Place Award for Missouri Watercolor Society Annual International Exhibition in 2016; First Place Award for Georgia Watercolor Society Annual Exhibition in 2016; and First Place Award for Illinois Watercolor Society Annual Exhibition in 2014.
Li was honored in 2015 with an MSU Distinguished Creative Productions award and in 2017 was a recipient of an Al Smith Individual Artist Fellowship from the Kentucky Arts Council.
