Morehead Writing Project receives grant to improve writing at local high school
The Morehead Writing Project (MWP) has received a $20,000 College, Career and Community Writers Program (C3WP) grant to improve the teaching of source-based argument writing at one area high school.
The grant will be used to provide professional development training and other teaching resources to instructors at Fleming County High School with the goal of teaching students argument writing strategies to improve their overall writing skills.
Dr. Deanna Mascle, an English instructor at Morehead State University and site director for the MWP, said the professional development training will give teachers argument writing strategies with a focus on evidence-based writing. She added the training has had a proven effect on student writing.
“The students of teachers who received C3WP training outperformed their control peers on their use of content, structure and stance in their argument writing,” said Mascle.

The MWP also will hold a workshop on argument-based writing on April 14 that is open to middle school, high school and college instructors. Several workshops also will be offered throughout the summer through the Kentucky Writing Project. More information is available at http://moreheadwritingproject.org/.
