SBDC Monthly Client Spotlight: The Sew-N-Love Shoppe
The Sew-N-Love Shoppe opened its doors in downtown Prestonsburg with the assistance of the Morehead State University East Kentucky Small Business Development Center in Pikeville.
Owner Janice Joseph had a desire to revive the interest in creative sewing, fashion and décor in her community and she has done just that. According to Joseph, her business has grown far more than she could ever imagine.
“The Pikeville SBDC offers a wonderful service to those wanting to start a business. They have been and continue to be my support system for my business needs. I feel blessed each day for this opportunity,” said Joseph.
The Sew-N-Love Shoppe offers classes teaching the art of sewing aprons, quilts, various bags, wall hangings and table runners just to name a few.
Joseph and her shop are known for their humanitarian efforts locally and abroad. In the past they have made chemo caps for cancer patients, prayer quilts for those suffering from terminal illnesses and diaper cakes for Appalachian Pregnancy Care Center. Various groups have made dresses in the shoppe and sent them abroad to Kenya, Africa and Haiti.
Currently, Joseph is working with a local community group that provides TRP services. The project is learning to sew a two-sided block style pillow. She also works with other groups to raise money for education through box top collection, pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House and plastic lids to help raise money to assist patients in paying for chemotherapy treatment. Nothing at The Sew-N-Love Shoppe is wasted; fabric scraps are used to stuff and make animal beds for the local animal shelter.
Also in the shop, make-up bags are being made and filled with various personal items. These bags will be donated to area Ronald McDonald Houses. A Bargello American Flag class recently wrapped-up, just in time for Independence Day. Two quilts are being made for the Appalachian Pregnancy Care Center and a quilt block contest is being judged.
Michelle Spriggs, Pikeville SBDC management consultant, presented Joseph with a certificate as its June 2018 Monthly Client Spotlight for her countless humanitarian efforts locally and abroad as a business leader in her community.
“It’s an honor to work with, know and become friends with entrepreneurs like Joseph. It’s people like her that make a difference in our communities,” said Spriggs.
