Annual faculty art exhibition open through Oct. 5
Faculty members showcased their skills at the 2018 Annual MSU Art and Design Faculty Exhibition in the Golding-Yang Art Gallery of the Claypool-Young Art Building Wednesday, Sept. 12.
Art students got the chance to see what their professors could create on a professional scale during the exhibition's reception. A faculty forum will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 11 a.m. where the participants will give a talk on their work and answer questions. The exhibition is on display through Oct. 5.
“It’s very interesting for students to not only come and see the work that is basically the professional practice of their faculty, but then the fact that we have the forum where they can actually hear their professors talk very directly about the work they make,” Jennifer Reis, Golding-Yang Gallery director, said.
Participating faculty brought various intriguing media to the show such as dye sublimation on aluminum made by digital art professor Gary Mesa-Gaido, ceramic sculptures with glass integrated into them by sculpture professor Helen Otterson, and photography printed on fabric mounted and stretched around canvas by photography professor Robyn Moore.
“I think it’s a great thing for them to just know that we don’t just talk the talk, we walk the walk,” Mesa-Gaido said. “It’s a way to sort of set an example, so someday they feel like they can do the same thing.”
Reis said the show is a nice celebration of the working artists on campus.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for the MSU community and the local community to come out and see the work that is being made by people teaching in the department.”
