SEIS Students attend International Manufacturing Technology Show
Faculty and students from Morehead State’s School of Engineering and Information Systems (SEIS) attended the 2018 International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) in Chicago, Illinois, Sept. 12-14.
IMTS attendees from MSU included: faculty members Dr. Jorge Ortega Moody, assistant professor of engineering and technology management, and Sam Mason, instructor of engineering and technology; graduate students Lindsay Childs, Sareh Ahmadi, Yosselin Castro Islas, Yevgeniy Byeloborodov and Molom-Ochir Mijid; and undergraduate students Justin Vanhoose and Kali Tackett. The group saw more than 2,500 companies covering 1.4 million square feet of exhibiting space. The trip provided many educational opportunities and employment opportunities for the students, allowing them to meet with manufacturing professionals from around the world and observe more than 15,000 state-of-the-art machine tools, controls, robots, computers, software, components, systems and other automated processes.
“ITMS is the largest manufacturing technology show in America and occurs every two years,” said Dr. Ahmad Zargari, SEIS associate dean. “It provides a great opportunity to expose our students to the most current high-tech manufacturing and automation techniques offered in today’s industry and allows the students to gain networking experience with the manufacturing professionals in their field.”
The educational opportunities at the conference included learning about new additive and subtractive manufacturing techniques, exploring demos of new computer aided design (CAD) and computer aided manufacturing (CAM) software. Students were also provided with a new student version of Solid Edge. This software provided to the students includes free online instructional lessons and free certification exams. The educational element of this trip allowed the students to return with new and exciting information to share with their peers.
There were numerous networking and future employment opportunities at the conference, with many of the exhibiting companies recruiting for full-time employment and internships, accepting resumes in their booths. The students were able to speak with companies such as Boeing, MasterCAM, AutoDesk, Fanuc, Autocam Medical, Promess and Korloy America.
