Upward Bound awarded NSF grant
The Upward Bound programs at Morehead State University have been selected from a national pool of applicants as a Teaching Through Technology (T3) adopter as part of a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant administered through the University of Alaska Fairbanks in partnership with the Council for Opportunity in Education. The purpose of the grant is to increase the interest of Upward Bound students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
The "Teaching through Technologies (T3) Alliance" will use instruction in three novel technologies: unmanned aerial systems (UAS), 3-D printers, and codable digital devices, to attract Upward Bound students to science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.
“In this area, STEM education within our high schools is often limited to the biological and medical fields,” Upward Bound Director Amanda Lewis said. “We are excited to be able to provide our students with the opportunity to expand their STEM knowledge beyond those fields.”
In addition to learning about the technologies, students will receive instruction in STEM communication and leadership, and will participate in community service projects using the technologies. The goal of the program is to develop a curriculum and support structure that can be widely adopted to increase students' interest in STEM.
