Annual 'Rocky Horror' screening, costume contest held

contest-1.jpgThe Annual MSU Costume Contest & Rocky Horror Picture Show Screening was held Wednesday, Oct. 31, in the Claypool-Young Art Building.

The celebration of the scariest and most anticipated night of the year started with refreshments, “Rocky Horror Picture Show” themed mocktails students could purchase and costume contest sign-ups in the Golding-Yang Art Gallery.

“When I first came to Morehead it was the first college town that I had been to that didn’t play Rocky Horror Picture Show around Halloween and I thought that was a real shame because it’s really fun, tacky and catchy, it’s also very gay friendly,” said Jennifer Reis, Golding-Yang Art Gallery director and host of the event.

The contest and judging followed in the Claypool-Young Art Auditorium. Students competed for first, second and third place University Store gift certificate prizes in the amounts of $75, $50 and $25, respectively, awarded by a panel of local jurors.

After the costume contest, the screening of the Rocky Horror Picture Show began.

Subtitles were turned on, so students could sing along and dance. Even though the film is well over 30 years old, the cult classic still impacts students today.

“The movie at this point has got to be over 30 years old, but people’s dialogue with the movie, what they call the call-outs, evolve with contemporary culture,” said Reis. “Every time that I sit in there with the students and watch the movie I just laugh.”

The event was sponsored by MSU’s Golding-Yang Art Gallery, Department of Art & Design, Spectrum, Emerging Arts Leaders of Eastern Kentucky (EALEK) and the Buckner and Sally S. Hinkle Endowment for Humanities. As a fundraiser, proceeds from the purchased mocktails went to EALEK.
