Trumpet Ensemble to perform at national competition

The Morehead State University Trumpet Ensemble, under the direction of Professor of Music Greg Wing, has been accepted to compete in the Large and Small Trumpet Ensemble Divisions during the 2019 National Trumpet Competition (NTC) March 14-16. This year's competition will be held on the campus of the University of Kentucky and is the most prestigious competition of its kind in the world.

The large ensemble of seven students and small ensemble of five students submitted video to NTC preliminary judges in December and were selected to compete in the live quarter final round during the competition. Wing said the ensemble has been preparing for the competition since November. The MSU Trumpet Ensemble B will be competing in the Large Division and will perform Eric Ewazen’s “Fantasia for Seven Trumpets.” The MSU Trumpet Ensemble A will be competing in the Small Division and will be performing Erik Morales’ “Path of Discovery.”

MSU has qualified for the NTC competition several times in years past.

“We have not made it into the finals yet, but are hopeful this year will be the year,” said Wing. “Both pieces (the ensembles will perform) are quite difficult and appropriate for this national competition.”

Approximately 70 trumpet ensembles will compete at the event, and there are also solo divisions at the Junior High, High School, Undergraduate and Graduate levels plus a Jazz Division.
