Upward Bound Math and Science student awarded scholarship

Thomas D. Cole, an Upward Bound Math and Science student from Montgomery County, has been awarded the Dean’s Scholar Award from Morehead State University valued at $10,000 to be distributed at $1,250 each semester through Spring 2023.

Due to Cole’s tenacity and determination he is graduating a year early from Montgomery County High School. During his time at MCHS he has managed to balance his academics and extracurricular activities including 4-H This Land is Our Land. Cole is also a member of Grassy Lick United Methodist Church. He attributes his successes to his main support system, his family: grandmother Oma Johnson, mother Jennifer Cole and brothers Charles and Jacob Cole.

Cole plans to major in biomedical sciences and nursing during his time at Morehead State University.

“Thomas is one of the most mature and dedicated students I have ever met. At such a young age, it seems he has already found the balance between working hard and enjoying new experiences. Thomas will be successful, no matter where life takes him,” said Samantha J. Bryant, associate director of Upward Bound Math and Science.

Upward Bound Math and Science is a college access program designed to prepare high school students for postsecondary education programs that lead to careers in the fields of math and science. Morehead State University hosts two Upward Bound Math and Science programs and two classic Upward Bound programs on its campus.
