MSU named School of the Year, earns additional honors from Kentucky Association of Residence Halls

The authentic Morehead State University experience wouldn’t be possible without providing an incredible living experience for its on-campus residents. Now, the housing experience, along with the people that make it possible, is award-winning. 

MSU was named the 2019 School of the Year by the Kentucky Association of Residence Halls (KARH), an organization tasked with representing student leaders in a residential setting throughout the state of Kentucky. The housing staff and students were honored at the 2019 Annual Conference hosted on campus at MSU’s newly renovated Adron Doran University Center. It was the fifth time KARH’s annual conference was hosted by MSU and it was attended by eight institutions and over 60 representatives.  

“We are incredibly proud to see our institution recognized as the School of the Year and our staff and students get some well-earned recognition from their peers throughout the state for their accomplishments and service,” said Alan Rucker, director of housing. “Residential communities at MSU are the best way for a student to live, learn and thrive, and these awards showcase the people and groups that make that happen, as well as the incredible institution itself.” 

MSU was honored institutionally as the KARH School of the Year. This is the organization’s highest honor for institutional achievement and contributions to student leadership and engagement within the residence halls on their campus. 

The KARH Student of the Year award was presented to MSU senior and Student Government Association President Brandon Bryer. This award recognizes the top student in and around the residence halls throughout the state that contributes to learning, engagement and connection for the residential operation and residential students on their home campus. 

The KARH Resident Assistant of the Year award was presented to MSU junior Micayla Gabrie. This award is given annually to the top resident assistant in the state of Kentucky in recognition of their commitment and contributions to the residential living operation from a staff position. 

The KARH Advisor of the Year was awarded to John Michael Haky, assistant director for student housing at MSU. This award is presented annually to the top advisor of a residential-focused student organization in the state, recognizing leadership initiatives, student engagement and membership development. Haky also co-advises MSU’s Residence Hall Association. 

The Program of the Year award was presented to MSU’s “Fall Festival.” Awarded to the top residential program in the state, this award recognizes a high-impact activity sponsored by an institution’s housing program that demonstrates student engagement, social connection and positive learning outcomes.
