Students show cattle at KFB Expo
Students from Morehead State's Department of Agricultural Sciences got some real-world livestock experience recently at the Kentucky Farm Bureau Beef Expo Cattle Show, held in Louisville earlier this month.
Joe Fraley, manager of the MSU farm who helps select students to show cattle, said many people don’t realize how much work goes into showing cattle, and he’s proud of the students who competed.
“In the end, the results for our livestock were as good as we could have hoped them to be with each of our customers being happy with their new purchases and the team taking home a Grand Champion banner.” Fraley added work has already begun for next year’s expo and cattle sales season.
One of MSU’s bulls won its age division, and two spring-bred heifers also won grand champion. A total of eight students showed cattle at the expo. They were:
- Luke Trapp, senior, Butler.
- Cody Clyburn, senior, Washington Court House, Ohio.
- Zach Ault, a senior from Washington Court House, Ohio.
- Chelsea Shell, senior, Midland, Ohio.
- Johnna Scott, senior, Winchester.
- Shannon Carey, junior, Independence.
- Randi Hensley, junior, Alexandria.
- Chase Dreyer, sophomore, Holland, Michigan.
“Next year’s show cattle and Beef Expo consignments are now being considered, even at just a few months of age. 2019 was successful for our agriculture department, and we look forward to what the summer has in store for the Derrickson Agriculture Complex,” he said.
