Celebration of Student Scholarship takes place April 24

Throughout the year, MSU students and faculty strive for academic excellence, and once a year, Morehead State has an event that highlights research and scholarship.

The 14th Annual Celebration of Student Scholarship will be held Wednesday, April 24, on the third floor of the Adron Doran University Center (ADUC). The event will begin at 8 a.m. and conclude with an awards ceremony at 3 p.m.

“With 198 presentations, involving 269 student scholars and their 112 faculty mentors, presided over by 112 faculty/staff/guest judges and session moderators, it promises to be a great event,” said Dr. Mike Henson, associate vice president for research and the dean of the Graduate School.

The Celebration of Student Scholarship showcases the outstanding scholarly work of students involved in the Undergraduate Research Fellowship program to the greater campus community. Initiated in the spring of 2006, the annual celebration has grown into a day-long event of presentations, exhibitions and performances by students from the Caudill College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, the College of Education, the College of Science and the Elmer R. Smith College of Business and Technology.

The format will feature student oral and poster presentations, followed by an end-of-the-day reception at which students and faculty mentors will be recognized and awards presented for student presentations of exceptional merit.

Over the past two decades, the involvement of students in faculty-mentored research, scholarly and creative work has been rapidly growing into a national phenomenon. Engaging students in these types of scholarly activities at the undergraduate level has been demonstrated to enhance student intellectual development, increase the number of students pursuing advanced degrees, and enhance retention and graduation rates.

At MSU, faculty in all disciplines are engaging students outside the traditional classroom setting in their professional scholarly endeavors. Based upon these collaborations, students are presenting, exhibiting and performing at state, regional and national forums, continuing MSU’s reputation for academic excellence.

The Celebration of Student Scholarship is part of MSU’s Spring Celebration Week. Additional events include the President's Spring Concert on the Lawn from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 25, at the Matthews Outdoor Performance Area of the ADUC, and the annual MSU Spring Gala at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at ADUC. Please plan to help us to continue to grow this exciting event by personally attending, sponsoring student presenters, volunteering to judge and encouraging all our students to attend in 2019. Everyone is welcome.
