INSIGHT camp set for June 8-15

INSIGHT, a postsecondary preparation program for high school students who are blind or visually impaired, will be held on the Morehead State University campus June 8-15. 

In its 13th year, the program is a collaboration between MSU, Kentucky Office for the Blind, Kentucky School for the Blind (KSB), Kentucky Education Development Corporation (KEDC) and the KSB Charitable Foundation. Nineteen students are expected to attend the camp this year. 

The program is offered to students who have completed the 10th, 11th or 12th grade and is designed to give them a real-world college experience, including living in a residence hall, attending academic classes and practicing orientation and mobility skills in a campus environment.  

“Its sponsors have consistently chosen us since the program's inception,” said Evangeline Day, MSU disability services coordinator. “The size, terrain and location of our campus are all factors. As a side effect of having a positive experience here, a number of the attendees choose to pursue their education here.”   

Although several INSIGHT alumni have enrolled at MSU, what students learn through the program are highly transferrable college skills that will support success at any postsecondary institution, and Day said the camp is not a recruitment tool for the University. However, one benefit of hosting the camp is that the University receives suggestions from participants on how physical accessibility on campus can be improved.  

Day said she draws a great deal of satisfaction from her work with the INSIGHT Camp. 

“INSIGHT's staff and agenda have made it the most personally rewarding program I've been a part of in my role as the disability services coordinator,” she said.
