Governor’s Scholars present posters at MSU this week
Two classes in the Governor’s Scholars Program (GSP) at Morehead State University will showcase their research posters on Wednesday, July 17, in the drill room of Button Auditorium.
Dr. Melony Shemberger, associate professor of journalism and mass communications at Murray State University and faculty member at GSP, teaches business, accounting and entrepreneurship as a focus area class, plus a general studies class concentrating on libraries and literacies.
The public is invited to view the posters and learn from Scholars. Students in business, accounting and entrepreneurship will be on hand to discuss their posters from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 17. The Scholars in Shemberger’s general studies class will share their work from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 18.
“I am excited for and proud of these Scholars,” Shemberger said. “They tackled their research projects by working together, using everyone’s talents and creating posters that showcase their newfound scholarship. To see these outcomes is truly rewarding for me, and I know it is for them, too.”
For their research posters, Scholars in business, accounting and entrepreneurship were challenged to think of themselves as innovators and consider solutions to problems by conceptualizing possible products or services. The large-format posters act as business plans that the students developed, describing their innovative approaches to tackle an issue, need, problem or concern.
Governor’s Scholars in the general studies class explored solutions to challenges that libraries face today and problems that these institutions will encounter. How to design and develop a library in the 21st century was a focus for each group of Scholars. The research posters they designed offer possibilities and explain limitations for libraries and communities to consider in the future.
The posters will be on display in the Button Drill Room for a limited time after the presentations conclude.
Morehead State was one of three campuses in Kentucky to host the 2019 Governor’s Scholars Program, a five-week summer program open to high school seniors. The program strives to enhance Kentucky’s next generation of civic and economic leaders.
Established in 1983, GSP provides academic and personal growth through an active liberal arts program with a full co-curricular and residential life experience. Students must complete an application and compete with others from across the Commonwealth. Those selected attend the program free of charge.
