Charli Jade Memorial Scholarship established

The Morehead State University Foundation has announced the establishment of the Charli Jade Memorial Scholarship, a fund to benefit MSU students. The 2019 recipient is Chloe Dickerson, a freshman astrophysics major from Elliott County. Her career goal is to become an astronomer.

"I have always been fascinated by space and astronomy. I have often studied it in my free time, and I took a tour of the Space Science Center and was enamored by it," Dickerson said. "This scholarship will help me pursue my education by allowing me to attend full-time without worrying about student loans."

The scholarship's namesake is the late Charli Jade Gilliam Wright, who passed away from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident while traveling to MSU's campus in 2013 at the age of 26. As an MSU student, she was pursuing a bachelor's degree in art.

"Being able to honor my sister's memory is something that means the world to my family and we are glad to be able to help a student from Elliott County," said Jenna Gilliam (13), Charli’s sister. "We wouldn't be able to do this without support from those who make financial contributions to keep this fund going. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you."

Scholarship criteria includes recipients being incoming freshmen who are graduates of Elliott County High School with a minimum high school GPA of 3.0. Preference will be given to applicants who have shown leadership through extracurricular activities and are pursuing a bachelor's degree in the Department of Art & Design. If a student majoring in one of these areas is not available, other majors may be considered.
