Blue and Gold Championship of Bands to be held Sept. 28
Morehead State will host its annual Blue and Gold Championship of Bands on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Jayne Stadium.
The event will feature high school bands from MSU's service region and beyond competing in both a preliminary and final round. Preliminary competition begins at 10 a.m. and finals begin at 6:15 p.m. Twenty-two bands from across the state will compete in this year's event.
In preliminary competition, in addition to ranking bands in their respective classes, awards for best percussion and best color guard will be awarded in each category. Bands receiving the highest score in their class will advance to finals competition along with the next seven highest scoring bands from the preliminary round, regardless of class. In finals competition, in addition to ranking bands in their respective classes, awards for best overall percussion and best overall color guard will be awarded. The band earning second place overall will be named reserve grand champion and the overall highest scoring band in the finals round of competition will receive the 2019 Blue and Gold Grand Champion Award.
The MSU Marching Band will perform in exhibition at 9:30 p.m., just before the presentation of final awards. The band will perform a selection of 80s hits from AC/DC, Van Halen, Fleetwood Mac and the B-52s.
"It's going to be an exceptional day of marching band performances," said Dr. DuWayne Dale, interim director of bands and assistant professor of music at MSU.
The adjudicators for this year's Blue and Gold are nationally known and have extensive experience judging marching bands from across the country. Most have extensive backgrounds judging for both Bands of America (BOA) and Winter Guard International (WGI).

Tickets for either the preliminary round or the final round are $5 for children 12 to six, $8 for both preliminaries and finals. Children under 6 are free.
