MSU to host Tri-State Conference on Diversity and Inclusion

Morehead State University will host the Sixth Annual Tri-State Conference on Diversity and Inclusion on Friday, Sept. 27, at the Adron Doran University Center.

The 2019 conference theme is “Equity in Education: Erasing Opportunity Gaps.” The conference will highlight how an equitable education system, from K-12 through postsecondary, will help all students develop knowledge and skills they need to be engaged, productive members of society on a local, national and international level. The staff from MSU’s Office of the President and the Office of Communications and Marketing will chair the conference.

Sponsoring institutions include MSU, MSU Ashland, Ashland Community and Technical College, Marshall University, Marshall University School of Pharmacy, Ohio University Southern, Mountwest Community and Technical College, Shawnee State University and the University of Rio Grande.

The keynote speakers are Dr. Paul Gorski, founder of EdChange and associate professor at George Mason University, and Dr. Aaron Thompson, president of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education. The speakers and concurrent workshops will focus on increasing access and removing barriers to equity in education.

“Morehead State University is pleased to be chosen as the site for the Sixth Annual Tri-State Conference on Diversity and Inclusion. As we intensify our efforts to ensure the success of low-income and underrepresented minority students, enhancing multicultural awareness is critical,” said Dr. Caroline Atkins, visiting assistant professor and assistant to the president for strategic initiatives. “The purpose of this one-day event is to begin and expand the conversation related to helping students, faculty, staff, community members and employers recognize and combat those biases and inequities that may undermine educational and employment opportunities for these populations.”
