Star Theater opens Sept. 7

Morehead State’s Star Theater, located in the Space Science Center, will open for the season on Saturday, Sept. 7.

The theater will offer more programming this year with weekly shows on Saturdays. Family shows, which are geared toward children ages 4 to 10, are at 11 a.m. Feature shows, geared toward middle and high school students, will be at 1 p.m. Laser shows will be at 4 p.m. All shows are appropriate for all ages.

Shows playing this month include:

  • Exploring New Horizons: This planetarium show explores the New Horizons spacecraft and its mission to dwarf planet Pluto and other Kuiper Belt Objects.
  • From the Earth to the Universe:  A desire to comprehend the Universe may well be humanity’s oldest shared intellectual experience. Only recently have we truly begun to grasp our place in the vast cosmos. The show explores the journey of celestial discovery, from the theories of the ancient Greek astronomers to today’s grandest telescopes.
  • Laser Country: Laser Country is dedicated to some of the greatest country hits of all time. Set to the all-American sounds of modern and classic country songs, this laser show will appeal to all generations.

Following each full-dome planetarium presentation there will be a live “star talk,” highlighting the planets, stars and constellations that visitors can see in their backyard that night. Also, those who attend shows on sunny Saturdays will have the chance to see the sun like never before through the Space Science Center’s solar telescopes.

Shanil Virani, director of the Star Theater and instructor of space science at MSU, said offering more planetarium shows and adding new activities to the schedule gives more people the chance to visit the planetarium.

“Our digital planetarium here at Morehead State University is a state-of-the-art facility, so we want to make this wonderful educational resource more readily available to families and other community members,” said Virani. “Very few communities in Kentucky, and indeed around the country, have the kind of planetarium that we do.”

Tickets for planetarium shows are $3 for adults and $2 for seniors and children ages 5 and up. Laser show tickets are $7 for adults and $6 for children ages five and up. MSU students and employees, and children four years old and under are admitted free to all shows. There are no reservations available for public presentations, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets must be paid for in cash only.
