Breakneck Hamlet to be staged Nov. 25

A performance that breathes new life into a literary classic will be held at Morehead State on Monday, Nov. 25.

“Breakneck Hamlet,” an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Elizabethan tragic play, “Hamlet,” will be staged at 7:30 p.m. in the Lucille Caudill Little Theater in Breckinridge Hall.  The play is being staged by the Tim Mooney Repertory Company based in Chicago.  The show is free and open to the public and seating is on a first-come-first-served basis.

The adaptation condenses the four-hour tragedy to a one-hour comedy, told from the perspective of the titular character, played by Mooney. After the performance, Mooney will hold a question and answer session with the audience.

“Tim Mooney does a great job of getting at the essence of Shakespeare and making it exciting and easy to understand. He is an engaging personality with a great sense of humor,” said Greg Carlisle, associate professor of theatre. “I admire Mooney’s ability to be in the story and outside it as narrator as well. I think audiences will make discoveries watching those perspective shifts and will also get a tighter sense of the story Shakespeare is telling. I hope this performance whets people’s appetites for Morehead State University’s production of Hamlet in March!”

This event is provided by support from the Buckner and Sally S. Hinkle Endowment for Humanities.
