Ceramics workshop to be held Feb. 3-4

A workshop featuring demonstrations from ceramics artist Mike Bowen will be held Feb. 3 and 4 at the Claypool-Young Art Building.

Bowen is an artist who specializes in ceramic, wood and metal sculpture. He is an adjunct instructor at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio, and has shown his work at numerous exhibitions throughout the southeastern U.S.

During the demonstrations, Bowen will show students some of the processes he uses on the potter's wheel as well as hand-building and sculpting, and how he combines them into unique works. He will also discuss the use of mixed media in his work and show the students how he develops some of the surfaces.

"I hope that they not only learn new techniques and ways of creating but come to better understand the way I look at industrial relics," Bowen said. "My hope is that they will start to look at discarded and used up objects not as mere trash but for the important role they served in our lives."

Demonstrations will be held at the following times:
  • Feb. 3, 10 a.m.-12:50 p.m., 104C Claypool-Young - Sculpture Room
  • Feb. 3, 2-4:45 p.m., 104C Claypool-Young - Sculpture Room
  • Feb. 4, 9:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m., 104C Claypool-Young - Sculpture Room

An afternoon lecture will be held Monday, Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. in 111 Claypool-Young, where participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about Bowen's process and techniques.

This event is provided by support from the Buckner and Sally S. Hinkle Endowment for Humanities.
