High school art exhibit opens March 4

High School Art Exhibit posterThe Annual Burley-Coal Art Exhibition and Competition will be held March 4-11 in the Golding-Yang Art Gallery inside the Claypool-Young Art Building. This exhibition is held each year in partnership with the Kentucky Art Education Association.

The show features hundreds of works in all media by regional high school students. Schools participating in the show include Allen Central, Bath County, Belfry, Boyd County, Fleming County, Greenup County, Lawrence County, Lewis County, Mason County, Montgomery County, Morgan County, Paintsville, Paul Blazer, Perry County Central, Pikeville, Raceland-Worthington Independent, Russell Independent and West Carter High Schools.

“For most, if not all, this is the first chance these budding artists have to exhibit their work in a formal gallery,” said Melissa Yungbluth, director of the Golding-Yang Gallery. “It’s a small taste of what their futures could be, and we are honored to be the regional chosen gallery for the inaugural displaying of their work.”

Awards are given in 13 different categories: ceramics, digital media, drawing, fashion design, fiber arts and textile design, graphic design, jewelry and metalsmithing, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture and video and film, as well as best in show 2-D and best in show 3-D. All first-place winners will move on to the all-state competition. The jurors are the faculty for the Department of Art and Design.

High School Art Day will be March 11. The exhibiting student artists will spend the day at the Department of Art and Design watching demonstrations, interacting with current students and faculty and participating in the annual sculpture contest, where within a few short hours, the schools as groups are tasked with creating sculptures using only cardboard and tape.
