Picture of Fred RossThe Morehead State University Foundation has announced the establishment of the Fred R. Ross Scholarship Endowment, a fund to benefit Morehead State University students.

The scholarship was established by Fred R. Ross (67), a long-time resident of Clermont County, Ohio. He first came to MSU in the fall of 1963 as a first-generation college student. He attended MSU as a financially independent student, working part-time and summer jobs to pay for his education. He graduated with his undergraduate degree in 1967 and his master’s degree in 1970. Upon graduation, he taught in several school systems, including Greenup County and Fleming County High School in Kentucky and Clermont Northeastern High School and the Great Oaks Career Development Campus of Scarlet Oaks in Ohio. He then served in several administrative positions, including assistant principal at New Richmond High School, principal at Van Buren High School in Findlay, Ohio, and business manager for Eaton City Schools. From 1986 to 1998, he served as a business manager and later as an assistant superintendent for the Deer Park City Schools near Cincinnati.

Ross went on to serve as an area coordinator and financial consultant for the Ohio Department of Education, Division of School Finance from 1999 to 2016. He also served as an adjunct professor at Xavier University in Cincinnati, teaching Ohio School finance from 2010 to 2017. Ross retired in 2017 after devoting more than 50 years to his career in education. To continue to honor his love of education, he established the Fred R. Ross Scholarship Endowment at MSU.

“I’ve always been proud of the education and training that MSU afforded me earlier in life and in this era of rising college costs, I wanted to make a small contribution in helping to keep those costs reasonable for graduating students from my home county who are looking to further their education,” Ross said.

The recipient of the Fred R. Ross Scholarship Endowment must be an incoming freshman and graduate of a public high school from Clermont County, Ohio, with a minimum 3.2 GPA and a minimum ACT score of 24. The scholarship award amount will initially be $10,000 per academic year. The scholarship is renewable if a 3.2 GPA and full-time status are maintained.
