Morehead Writing Project offers online summer writing camp
With the cancellation of in-person camps at Morehead State University for Summer 2020, the Morehead Writing Project will offer an online summer writing camp.
The Power Your Story Y'all Summer Writing Camp is open to high school writers (rising eighth graders through graduating seniors) and will focus on solutions journalism. Participants will choose an overlooked and misunderstood issue touching their community. They will be guided through the process of crafting a news story for publication in the style of long-form journalism, a branch of journalism that generates longer and more in-depth articles than the typical news story.
The camp is scheduled for the first two weeks in June. Participants can attend either week or both if they choose:
- Week 1 – June 1-5
- Week 2 – June 8-12
Registration for the camp is $80 for one week or $150 for two weeks.
Dr. Deanna Mascle, instructor of English at MSU, and Sarah Webster of Gallatin County High School will provide non-evaluative support during the camp weeks. It will be a combination of morning meetings, daily writing prompts and activities the writers will work on independently, and small group workshops in the afternoon or evening.
"So many students have lost opportunities for this summer and we hope that our Power Your Story Y'all Summer Writing Camp will allow students to learn something new, connect with other creative-minded teens and learn more about the Morehead State University community," Mascle said. "This camp will be fun and flexible, and we can't wait to get started."
