MSU presents recital highlighting female composers for Women’s History Month

Women Composers Recital PosterThe Morehead State University School of Creative Arts and the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance will present "A Recital of Women Composers" in honor of Women's History Month. The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, and will be available to view virtually on the Music at Morehead State University Facebook page at www.facebook.com/MoreheadStateMusic.

The program is a collaboration between MSU faculty accompanist William A. Murphy, who is also the concert organizer, and faculty and students from the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance. Featured musicians include:

  • Dr. Stacy Baker, Professor of Music - Tuba/Euphonium
  • Noah Scott Bruce, Senior Voice Performance Student - Vocals
  • Derek Easterling, Graduate Music Student - Euphonium
  • Dr. Nathan Mensink, Visiting Assistant Professor of Music – Saxophone

Murphy said he wanted to create a concert in honor of Women's History Month unlike any presented at MSU. He made female composers the central theme since female composers' work hasn't been recognized as much compared to their male counterparts. Composers featured in this concert include Amy Beach, Cecile Chaminade, Paule Maurice, Florence Price and Barbara York.

"I wanted there to be variety in the music and I wanted to cite works and composers from the early 20th century up until now," Murphy said. "The thought to recognize the female composer is quite new and more research is being done to shed light on these women for their musical intellect."
