Molly C. McBride remembered through annual scholarship and tutoring award

The Molly C. McBride Memorial Scholarship Endowment was created in 2013 to honor the life of former MSU student, Molly McBride. McBride’s life ended prematurely at the age of 21 on May 18, 2013, after being involved in an automobile accident. At the time of her passing, she was a junior biomedical sciences major at Morehead State University and was planning for a career as a physician¹s assistant. Molly was a dedicated student who enjoyed helping others, especially through her work as a tutor in MSU’s Tutoring and Learning Center.

After her passing, Molly's parents, Dr. M. Scott McBride and Ms. Jill E. McBride, created a fund through the MSU Foundation to honor her legacy. Thanks to the support of a host of family members and friends the endowment is now valued at over $50,000.

“We are sincerely grateful for everyone at Morehead State who supported us upon Molly’s passing and for the continuing contributions to the endowment in her memory,” said Dr. M. Scott McBride on behalf of the McBride family.

Each year, two awards are made to current MSU students through this endowment. The Molly C. McBride Memorial Scholarship is awarded to seniors majoring in biomedical sciences or agricultural sciences and the Molly C. McBride Tutoring Excellence Award is given annually to a tutor who demonstrates superior tutoring skills and caring for MSU students.

TBrittany Brewer Picturehe 2020-21 recipient of the Molly C. McBride Memorial Scholarship was Brittany Brewer (Class of 2021), recent agricultural sciences education graduate from Greenville, Ohio. Brewer was actively involved on campus serving as an Agriculture Ambassador, a member of Delta Tau Alpha honor society and served as vice president. She was also a member of MSU Collegiate Farm Bureau and served as secretary. Additionally, she worked part-time at the Derrickson Agricultural Complex throughout her time as a student.

Brewer comes from a large family with 11 siblings, seven of which are still at home. In her scholarship application, she stated that scholarship support was essential in her ability to continue her education at MSU.

“My parents both work endlessly to provide for our family.  However, without the assistance of scholarships, college would not be possible for me,” Brewer said. “My family and I greatly appreciate this scholarship.”

Minh Tran PictureThe Spring 2021 recipient of the Molly C. McBride Tutoring Excellence Award was Minh Tran (Class of 2021), recent biomedical sciences graduate from Hanoi, Vietnam. Tran was a member of the George M. Luckey Jr. Academic Honors Program. She began working as a tutor in 2018 in biology, chemistry, ACT preparation and mathematics, among other subjects. Minh also spearheaded an initiative to provide virtual drop-in MCAT preparation study groups.

"Working as a tutor has been a highlight during my undergraduate years. I am happy to be able to help students with their academic work," Tran said. "Above all, I am truly grateful that I have learned so much from my students, from showing empathy and understanding their concerns to tailoring how I explain the information to the students. Without the students and MSU TLC, I would have never had this valuable experience.”
