Constitution Day events are Sept. 16-17

Morehead State's Department of History, Philosophy, Politics, Global Studies and Legal Studies is sponsoring events Sept. 16 and 17 to commemorate the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution.   

Thursday, Sept. 16, a panel discussion titled "The Supreme Court Term Ahead" will preview the U.S. Supreme Court's upcoming term, focusing on the cases that raise constitutional questions such as abortion and gun rights. The panelists will be Assistant Professor of Political Science, Dr. Douglas Mock and Joe Dunman, assistant professor of legal studies. The panel discussion will be held in the ADUC Theater at 5 p.m. and is open to the public.   

On Friday, Sept. 17, at 4 p.m., MSU students will read the U.S. Constitution at the Little Bell Tower on campus led by Dunman.  The event is open to the public and any student who wishes to participate in the reading may do so. Students who are not currently enrolled in one of Dunman's classes but would like to participate in the reading should contact him at l.dunman@moreheadstate.edu before Sept. 17.

"Student turnout is usually somewhere between 20 and 30, so it's a pretty big group," Dunman said. "The U.S. Constitution is the foundation of our system of government, and it provides a window into our history as a nation. Many Americans will never read the Constitution at any point in their lives, but Morehead State students will and they will gain an important perspective on how our government is structured and what its priorities have been in the past and continue to be today."
