MSU Anthropology Professor Dr. Tim Hare publishes article about ancient Mayan living spaces
Dr. Timothy Hare, associate professor of anthropology at Morehead State University, has published an article in a prestigious anthropology journal.
The article "A Space of One's Own: Houselot Size Among the Ancient Maya" was published in the Journal of Anthropological Archeology. Using new data from lidar mapping, it compares house lot data from large cities and rural areas to explore how this data was an indicator of wealth and social status.

Hare published this with fellow anthropology faculty from institutions across the country, including Dr. Scott R. Hutson (University of Kentucky), Dr. Travis Stanton (University of California, Riverside), Dr. Marilyn Masson (University at Albany), Dr. Nicolas Barth (University of California, Riverside), Dr. Traci Arde (University of Miami) and Dr. Aline Magnoni with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Hare's extensive research resulted in detailed studies of settlement and comparisons of household wealth, health and activities that characterized daily urban life at the Postclassic Maya capital city of Mayapán (A.D. 1150-1450) in Yucatan, Mexico.
"I take pride in working with outstanding colleagues from around the world to contribute to a better understanding of the ancient Maya and their ways of life," Hare said. "Humanity benefits from building a deeper understanding and appreciation of our heritage in overcoming the challenges faced in diverse environments."
Hare has been with MSU since 2003. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology in 1991 and a Master of Arts in Economic Anthropology in 1993, both from the University of Iowa, and a Ph.D. in Anthropology in 2001 from the University of Albany. Hare's prior work has also appeared in Latin American Antiquity and Anthropos. He also recently co-authored a book titled "Settlement, Economy, and Society at Mayapán, Yucatan, Mexico" published by the University of Pittsburgh Center for Comparative Archeology.
