MSU’s Level UP Program allows health and wellness students to give back

Level UP Health Student PictureMorehead State University students are gaining hands-on experience while developing career skills through the University's Level UP Program. As part of MSU's Wellness Day program hosted by the Office of Human Resources, students in Professor of Health and Wellness Dr. Jenny Dearden's Health and Wellness Promotion course engaged in a service-learning project.

Students are taking concepts and theories about motivating individuals toward wellness goals learned in the classroom and developing an information board and activities that MSU employees can engage in to learn more about easy exercises and reducing sugar intake. The project enhances skills in teamwork and focuses on engaging team members in ways that facilitate contributions and resolve conflict in a way that strengthens overall team cohesiveness.

"Service learning is a great way for students to practice the academic concepts that they have been studying in class while making a positive impact on the surrounding community," said Louise Mason, coordinator of service learning at MSU.

Level UP is an initiative to ensure students have the opportunity to engage in experiences to prepare them for success, including undergraduate research, education abroad, service learning and internships. It includes courses that build students' communication, professionalism, critical thinking and teamwork skills. Level UP further focuses on training students to convey evidence of these career skills that are highly desirable to employers across disciplines.
