MSU music program hosts Women Composers Recital on International Women’s Day

Morehead State University's music program will showcase work by female composers in its upcoming Women Composers Recital. The event is at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8, at the Duncan Recital Hall inside Baird Music Hall.  

The Women Composers Recital will feature music from the mid-1800s to the present from living and departed women composers.  

"This is a continuation of a recital performed in the spring of 2021. That recital, unfortunately, had to be performed virtually," said William Murphy (Class of 2009), staff pianist at MSU. "This recital is going to be performed live, again with works by outstanding female composers. Coincidentally, the recital is scheduled for International Women's Day."  

MSU music faculty participating:  

  • Dr. Julie Baker, visiting instructor of flute - Flute  
  • Dr. David Oyen, professor of bassoon - Bassoon  
  • William Murphy, staff pianist – Piano  
  • Dr. Thomas Pappas, assistant professor of oboe – English Horn  

Musical compositions in the program:  

  • “Circadia” (2002) by Adrienne Albert  
  • Three piano pieces by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel  
  • “Requiem Milonga” (2018) by Valerie Coleman  
  • "Sonata in E Minor" (1932) by Florence Price  
  • "Chrysalis" (2015) by Alyssa Morris  

The event is free and open to the public. Masks are required for those who attend. The performance will live stream on the Music at Morehead State University Facebook page.
